Liza Hoos – Director,
Producer, Cinematographer, Editor
Liza is a recent graduate of a Coastal Environmental Management master’s degree program at Duke University, and is currently the North Carolina Sea Grant Marine Fisheries Fellow, where she conducts research to find ways of decreasing accidental catch of marine life by commercial fishermen. Though this is her first film project, she hopes to continue to make films that highlight the lives of people who are inextricably tied to and dependent upon the world's oceans. |
Dr. Xavier Basurto – Director, Producer, Cinematographer
Xavier has a passion for incorporating the arts into science and conservation. While currently a professor at Duke University, he is by training both a marine biologist and expert on the nature of common pool resources. He has spent many years in the Sea of Cortez, developing relationships with both locals and key players in the marine conservation organizations in the area. He cares deeply for the Sea of Cortez – the people, the wildlife, the water - and wants to share the beauty that he sees and has experienced there with a larger audience. |
Hudson Weaver – Producer
Hudson is the coordinator of the Marine Conservation Program for La Paz based social and environmental NGO Sociedad de Historia Natural Niparaja. With more than 15 years of experience working with fishing communities in the Gulf of California, she possesses a deep knowledge of the social and environmental reality of small-scale fisheries, as well as its management systems. Particularly, she is interested in helping to generate a culture of custody and participation of fishermen in decision-making, as well as caring for the habitats and ecological processes in which sustainability of fishing depends on. |
